Calligraphy is a lightweight hobby! For me, it's the most wonderful job in the world as well. I've been teaching some modern calligraphy classes recently, and people ask me what equipment they need to practice at home. If you've been wondering too, here's my list of the basic supplies for anyone to get started in modern calligraphy.

Basic modern calligraphy equipment for absolute beginners

  • Nib: a 'G' nib is best for beginners. Look for Nikko G, Zebra G or Tachikawa G nibs. They're my favourites.
  • You will need a few nibs as they do go rusty easily. Once you've used a nib, store it away from brand new ones. This is because rust is contagious!
  • Penholder: a straight penholder with metal teeth is perfect for beginners.
  • Ink: you can find cheap calligraphy ink on the high street. Avoid general ink like fountain pen ink or India ink, as they often don't work with dip pens.
  • Paper: you'll get through a lot of practice paper when you start out! Choose a quality printer paper with a minimum 120gsm. This is the paper I use for calligraphy practice.
  • Instructions! You can find instructions and guides for modern calligraphy on YouTube and Etsy. I have a set of modern calligraphy worksheets in my Etsy shop, designed for absolute beginners.
